What is vaginal flora? The vaginal flora is a group of microorganisms, bacteria and yeasts, that live in the vagina. A few hundred million of these physiological germs per milliliter form a protective biofilm on the vaginal mucosa and maintain the local balance. It’s a kind of ecosystem that protects you from infectious and physicochemical aggressions. Lactobacilli, in particular, play an essential role, helping to maintain the normal acidity of the vagina and blocking the proliferation of microbes.

There are 3 main causes of changes in these protective bacteria:

Hormonal imbalances that alter the vaginal mucosa: menopause, use of progestins, the low-dose estrogen-progestin pill (in certain cases), diabetes. According to Professor Philippe Judlin, head of gynecology at the Nancy Regional Maternity Hospital, “oestrogens play an essential role in achieving and maintaining a balanced vaginal flora”.

Excessive hygiene (excessive intimate hygiene, internal douching):

Protective lactobacilli are stored in the rectum and migrate to the vagina to form the bulk of the flora. However, common antiseptic soaps destroy them and change the acidity of the vagina!

Taking medication, especially antibiotics, which is logical since these drugs are designed to destroy certain bacteria.

Stress and smoking also reduce local vaginal immunity.

The pH of the vulva and vagina is ideally between 4 and 4.7, but it can become more alkaline, tending towards 5, leading to an imbalance in the vaginal and vestibular flora (space between the labia minora).

The role of certain clothing practices in genital infections was clarified by the Italian SOPHY (Study On pH and Hygiene) study. While it confirmed that vaginal mycosis is more common with synthetic underwear than with natural underwear (25.5% vs. 15.7%), it also revealed that the first enemy is the panty liner! That is why we advise you to wear them only occasionally. If worn daily, they increase the risk of fungal and vaginal infections by almost 35% compared to 25%. SOPHY also confirms that wearing tight jeans increases the risk of fungal infections due to friction. Pantyhose, on the other hand, had no negative effect.

Pr Boiteux:

“In tight pants, it seems quite logical, without having any experimental proof, that sweat and friction increase the development and passage of this pathogenic germ from the anus to the vagina. Ideally, this area should be ventilated and loose-fitting clothing worn, especially by women prone to recurrent cystitis.

Whatever the reason for their use, some intimate hygiene products may do more harm than good. That’s according to a study that shows an increased risk of vaginal infections when some of these products are used too often.

For the study, scientists surveyed 1,500 Canadian women. They were interested in their vaginal hygiene habits, the products they used, and the frequency of their vaginal problems.

The most commonly reported products were wipes, cleansing gels, anti-itch creams, moisturizers and lubricants. Women who used cleansing gels were eight times more likely to have a yeast infection and 20 times more likely to have a bacterial infection.

Incredible as it may seem, it is possible to find intimate deodorants on the market. Even if they’re alcohol-free and fragrance-free, these products should be avoided because, in addition to upsetting your vaginal flora, they can cause irritation, burning, or chafing.

Some Pads:

Some pads contain “super absorbent” gels. These are made of sodium polyacrylate crystals (the same as those found in diapers or baby wipes), an absorbent polymer that turns to gel when wet and can absorb up to 800 times its weight in water – it’s also found in the little white pouches that absorb moisture.

Tampons are made from a blend of cotton (grown with toxic pesticides) and rayon (or viscose), a highly absorbent man-made material made from the cellulose pulp of trees.

Today, toxic ingredients in tampons and disposable pads include aluminum, alcohols, fragrance additives (particularly irritating), and hydrocarbons, not to mention pesticides. Even worse, some tampon bleaching processes leave dioxin residues.

The vaginal wall

The vaginal wall is highly absorbent, so the chemicals in these disposable products have no problem getting into the body. The problem is that the body doesn’t know how to get rid of them and over time accumulates all these toxins that are dangerous to your health.

Organic menstrual protection is now available for women during their period. Choose tampons and pads made from chlorine-free organic cotton, without chemical additives and made from natural materials.

The vagina contains what is known as the “physiological vaginal flora” or “vaginal microbiota,” a collection of “good” bacteria. Their role is to protect the vagina from infection by bad bacteria and fungi.

Probiotics have been shown to help prevent recurrence and reduce the symptoms of fungal infections.

A balanced gut flora is the key to good health. In fact, the intestinal flora plays three fundamental roles: a nutritional role, a role as a barrier against pathogenic microorganisms, and a fundamental role in “educating” and stimulating the immune system. Probiotics, live beneficial bacteria, become part of the intestinal flora once ingested. Prebiotics selectively stimulate the growth and/or biological activity of one or more species of bacteria (probiotics).

The Baobab

Baobab is an excellent source of prebiotics. Prebiotics “house” probiotic bacteria and stimulate their growth by feeding them.

Prebiotics are substances that improve the internal environment of the intestines. They help feed and maintain the good bacteria already present in the body, allowing the probiotics to work in optimal conditions.

You can take one tablespoon of powder daily for 1 month.

Baobab oil is a natural anti-yeast. It acts as an antifungal and antibacterial agent. It reduces inflammation and stimulates the immune system.

Organic Baobab Oil has many “health” virtues that enable it – in addition to being nicknamed the “pharmacy in a bottle” – to alleviate a number of gynecological problems such as vaginal dryness and mycosis.

Organic Baobab Oil:

Organic Baobab Oil is a well-known beauty “trick” in the world of cosmetics. It’s used to boost thinning hair as well as to nourish the skin. But there’s more to it than that. Gynecologist and phytotherapist Bérengère Arnal explains: “Baobab oil is called a pharmacy in a bottle. Thanks to its high content of saturated fatty acids, it is antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-colibacillary, anti-streptococcal, anti-staphylococcal, antiseptic, antiviral and moisturizing”.

You can apply it to the vulva at night before going to bed. Or use it regularly as a lubricant during intercourse.

Moringa

Moringa is a plant with many health benefits. The leaves in particular are a true treasure for our bodies. This plant helps lower blood pressure, stimulates the immune system, improves digestion, reduces inflammation, and helps lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Moringa’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties help fight infections and many diseases.

Intimate hygiene:

Intimate hygiene must be external: it should never include the inside of the uterus.

On the outside, on the vulva, your body knows how to defend itself. The skin is impervious to bacteria. The mucous membrane between the labia minora is more fragile, but its moisture is full of antibodies and defenses (flora bacteria) designed to protect you.

Preferably use warm water (without soap) to wash the genital area. Otherwise, use soap-free soaps. Don’t try to mask odors with deodorants or perfumed products, which can weaken the mucous membranes and cause burning.

Taking a saltwater bath can also help relieve vaginal itching. The salt controls the growth of microbes that cause infection, reducing itching and other discomfort.

Method of preparation:

Add 1 tablespoon of Guérande salt to a glass of baobab leaf tea water and use it to wash your vagina whenever you feel the itching. This will give you instant relief.

Alternatively, fill your bathtub with warm water, baobab leaves, and ½ cup of salt. Sit in the water in a squatting position for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat 2 or 3 times a day for a few days for best results.

Intimate cleansing with baobab leaves: Soothing, disinfecting, they play a role in intimate hygiene and certain plants help tighten the vagina and treat vaginal dryness. Feminine hygiene preserves the vaginal flora. Made up of lactobacilli, the vagina’s natural bacteria, the flora protects against infection.

Finally, Guinea sorrel (scientific name: Hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as bissap or roselle) is a herbaceous plant of the Malvaceae family that grows in tropical zones, particularly in Guinea, where it originated and then spread to the rest of West Africa (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Benin, Togo, Niger, southern Mali, northern Côte d’Ivoire), Botswana and Congo. The plant is also known in Egypt, Sudan, Central Africa (called Karakandji), Cameroon (called Folere) and Mexico, where it is known as Flor de Jamaica. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, it is known as Groseille pays (Gwozey peyi in Creole) or simply Groseille, as well as in Southeast Asia.

Karkadé

Karkadé – sometimes spelled “carcadet” – or bissap is the drink made from the flowers of this red-flowered hibiscus, and the boiled leaves are used for intimate cleansing.

To prepare a decoction of hibiscus flower and baobab leaf, boil a few leaves for 20 minutes, let cool, add a little honey, boil and use the mixture for intimate cleansing. This wash is said to refresh the vagina, tighten it and give it a pleasant scent.
